More than 1 lakh coronovirus cases were reported in Assam, 10th state of cross mark


Assam crossed the figure of 1 lakh coronavirus cases on Friday night, with 2,560 new infections detected in 24 hours. So far, around 300 deaths have been linked to the virus, with eight of the reported deaths till date.
Out of 1,01,367 Kovid cases in the state, 21,771 are active cases, while about 80,000 have been discharged from hospitals and medical facilities after receiving treatment.

Worried over the steady increase in cases, the state government has warned people of another lockdown on not following the guidelines.

“If people do not wear masks and there is a steady increase in the number of cases, the Assam government may be forced to implement yet another lockdown. However, this is not a course we want to take, If the number does not come down, then we. Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna told reporters that he should be forced to take drastic steps yet again.

The northeastern state has so far reported a positivity of 6.38 percent, slightly lower than the national average of around eight percent.

However, it also has the highest recovery rate (80.26 percent) and lowest death rate (0.28 percent) in the country. The corresponding national averages are 76 percent and 1.8 percent respectively.

The doubling rate in Assam, the worst affected among the northeastern states, is 22 days and the state is currently testing at a rate of 61,000 per million. More than 40,000 tests were conducted on Friday. According to news agency PTI, around 21.47 lakh samples have been tested for COVID-19 so far.

Earlier this week, 85-year-old former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that he too has tested positive for the virus.

The veteran Congress leader had been traveling extensively for the last few days to strengthen the party’s base ahead of the state elections. Mr. Gogoi was traveling with former Minister of State Ajanta Neg, who has also tested positive.

Other prominent political leaders who have tested positive in Assam are BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and former Congress MP from the Lok Sabha Sushmita Dev.

Of the 13 state legislators who have tested positive, seven are from BJP, three from Congress, two from AGP and one from AIUDF.

The first Kovid case in the state was revealed on 31 March and it has taken 150 days to cross the 1 lakh coronavirus cases mark.

The number of coronavirus cases in India is around 3.4 million, of which around 61,500 deaths are related to the virus and 7.42 lakh are active cases.
